The Wellness Revolution: A Mind-Body-Soul Connection…

When You Say You Can’t, You Won’t

There is an on going phenomenon with how people initally react when you make suggestions for their own good.  The common answer that I get a lot from not only patients, but from friends and family is, “I can’t.”  I notice that a lot of people say I can’t not because they really CAN’T, but because they really WON’T.  I think that we should all be making an effort to say that we’ll give it a shot or to at least ponder the idea for a while before we turn down the suggestion.

What would have happened if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said “I can’t” before he made his famous I Had a Dream speech?  What if D.D. Palmer said “I can’t” when Harvey Lillard walked into his office looking for help?  What if your mom and dad said “we can’t” before you were concieved?  These are examples of events that have changed the world as we know it.  What if Obama said “No, we can’t”?

When I see a patient who is unwilling to put the same amount of effort that I am putting into their care, I have to seriously sit back and consider the other possibilities for this person.  Is it worth my time and effort and their time and money to try and help them heal?  I try and encourage all my people (friends, family, patients, etc.) to start saying “I’ll try” or “I will” before they say “I can’t” or “I won’t”.

The only person who get ‘s in your way is YOU.  Utilize the people who love you and care for you enough to take their word and their suggestions to heart.  They only make suggestions for the the greater good of YOU.  We are all self-evolving organisms and the only way that we evolve is through change.

Stay True!

How am I Different?

img_6792A common question that I get asked quite often from new patients is, “So, how are you different than a NORMAL Chiropractor?” I actually really like this question for a few reasons.
One is because they already understand, before I even work with them, that I am completely different than their last Chiropractor. They have an intuitive understanding that they are about to experience something that they have not experienced before.
Second is that they just gave me an open invitation to sell them MY Chiropractic, which of course is Dr. B.J. Palmer’s Chiropractic. When they hear that what I am doing is actually a technique (Upper Cervical Specific Care) derived from the 1930’s they go crazy. “You mean this isn’t a new thing? How come this isn’t more common?”
That’s where I start to question our profession. I know that back pain is what most people think we, as Chiropractors, treat. But, lets go back into the Green Books. Let’s look back to the true philosophy of Chiropractic, D.D. Palmer style. Unfortunately, a lot of people have their own Philosophy to match what they do in practice. But, D.D. clearly states that he isn’t treating symptoms, but simply removing interference. B.J. Palmer took that one step further. He was removing the interference within the life-force of the body.
You look at a lot of high volume practices and you would initially think that this Doc is good. People keep coming back for their care, sometimes three times a week for the rest of their lives. High volume should not be the same people coming in over and over again so that your patient visit numbers are going up. High volume should be where your patient base is so enormous that you can check one person 1-2 times a month, but still have 100 or more visits a week. How do you do that? By being an awesome and honest doc. If you get sick people well and maintain that wellness, then they will refer. If they each refer 5-10 people each, and those people refer 5-10 people each, and so on, then you will have a high volume practice without the need to rely on your patients coming in multiple times a week.
B.J. wasn’t seeing the same people over and over again. Once they were well, he released them from care. He didn’t then set them up on a lifetime care plan. If they became un-well again, then he would serve them if need be.
So, how am I different? I am the Chiropractor whose goal is to not see you. I want to get you to the point where you come in 1-2 a month (or less!) just to get checked and if an adjustment is warranted, then you’ll get ROCKED! You, as the patient, pay me to get you well, and to maintain that wellness. If you don’t need an adjustment, then I have done my job.
By the way, THAT is normal Chiropractic.

Lead Through Example

59725486_900aa62239jpg2Something that has always amazed me is the lack of Health in Healthcare. I’m not talking about how the insurance companies want to keep you sick to make profit or how your Medical Doctor is feeding you toxic chemicals to regulate the side-effects of the last toxic chemical they gave you. I am taking about the lack of health that the Healthcare Practitioner is providing for them self.

Being in practice or in school can be very hard on your body. From the lack of sleep, not being able to afford good food, sitting or standing all day, stressing about finances, or simply not having the time to take care of you. This article is not going to give you a step-by-step routine to follow for health, but I really want you to take a look at your own personal habits and how they might be reflecting on your practice. Maybe, if you are a personal trainer, you should workout as well to look fit as an example for your client. Maybe Chiropractors should be getting adjusted (Upper Cervical in my opinion). Maybe Nutritionists should be following a health diet themselves.

I remember being at Chiropractic school and there were “Smoking Sections” and during every break there was a certain group of people always there. What happens when you are adjusting someone and talking to the about Wellness Care and you smell like smoke? Just the other day I was at a gym and there was a personal trainer with a wonderful “Beer Belly” and he wasn’t an older gentleman at all.

All I’m saying is that YOU, as a HEALTHcare provider, need to start setting an example for the people you serve. Start living an active healthy life being the role model that so many people lack in our Unhealthy Nation today.

If I need to refer out my people to another practitioner for any reason, I am for sure going to send them to the person who I see as the best potential role model. Just remember, YOU are the best testimonial for the care that YOU provide. First impression is the most important.

Dig it!

The One Minute Manager

51p6dapqsxl_sl500_sx85_Early this morning when I woke up I was feeling a little over-whelmed.  It’s Sunday just before 7 am, and I was feeling a little Chiropractically (is that even a word?) worn out.  I know a lot of you are either thinking that it’s not possible to be in that position, but when you read, promote, practice, train, write, network, and publicize yourself and Chiropractic as much as I do, then you might understand where I am coming from.  You might have a little sympathy.  Sometimes you need to take a step back from your passion to appreciate it more.

So, instead of picking up “Book Yourself Solid” by Michael Port and it’s workbook, I decided to read something that has been sitting in my pile of “Must Reads” from Dr. Shawn Dill’s book list called “The One Minute Manager” by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson.  This was my Sunday pick because I am starting to feel self consumed with MYSELF and MY SUCCESS that I wasn’t really thinking about the people who I work with and who work for me.

“The One Minute Manager” took me all of one and a half hours to read and take notes on (it’s only 107 pages with large font) and to absorb into my practice life.  This book puts management into a super easy and positive practice.

We have all had jobs, or have jobs, where your boss is either a total jerk, airhead, controlling idiot, or maybe the nicest push over you have ever met.  I have had countless numbers of jobs from being a musician, a veterinary technician, coffee barista, healthcare instructor, emergency medical technician, and the list goes on.  Throughout these jobs I have always said that I could do a better job then any of my managers.  I would get so frustrated that eventually I would just quit.  I was tired of being told ONLY what I did wrong and never praised for when I did something right.  I would hold a job for about a month to about two years (on a rare occasion) and never once did I really end up liking my boss.

Now that I am my own boss and I have people working under me, I decided to take a stand and not be that typical boss that everyone hates or takes advantage of.

At the end of this book, the authors ask for the reader to share the knowledge that has been passed down to them.  So, that’s what I am going to do in this blog.  I still highly recommend going out and buying this book.  It’s definitely one to re-read every year to remind yourself that you are NOT that boss, parent, spouse, or friend.  This book really can be adapted in everyday life.

The Three Secrets to GREAT Managing:

1.             One Minute Goal Setting

a.     Agree on your goals.

b.     See what good behavior looks like.

c.      Write out each of your goals on a single piece of paper using less then 250 words.

d.     Read and re-read each goal, which requires only a minute or so each time you do it.

e.     Take a minute every once and a while out of your day to look at your performance

f.      See whether or not your behavior matches your goal.

2.             One Minute Praising

a.     Tell people up front that you are going to let them know how they are doing.

b.     Praise people immediately.

c.      Tell people what they did right – be specific.

d.     Tell people how good you feel about what they did right, and how it helps the organization (or family) and other people who work there (or live there).

e.     Stop for a moment of silence to let them “feel” how good you feel.

f.      Shake hands or touch the person in a way that makes it clear that you support their success in the organization (or family).

3.             The One Minute Reprimand

a.     Tell people beforehand that you are going to let them know how they are doing in no uncertain terms.

b.     Reprimand people immediately.

c.      Tell people what they did wrong – be specific.

d.     Tell people how you feel about what they did wrong and in no uncertain terms.

e.     Stop for a few seconds of uncomfortable silence to let them “feel” how you feel.

f.      Shake hands or touch the person in a way that lets them know you are honestly on their side.

g.     Remind them how much you value them.

h.     Reaffirm them that you think well of them, but not of their performance in this situation.

i.       Realize that when the reprimand is over, IT’S OVER.

Those are the three secrets of One Minute Managing.  The beauty is that eventually the people who work for you or live with you will start doing this to themselves so that you don’t have to do it.  If you make it touch them emotionally then they will realize that since being praised feels so good, then they will praise themselves and reprimands by you feel so uncomfortable that they will prefer reprimanding themselves.

I hope you found this informative and helpful.  I truly believe that the happier people are in your practice and family then the more happiness you attract.  People will start wanting to come in to your practice as patients, work for you, or your kids will do all of their chores without a fuss.

When LESS is MORE

Its pretty incredible how many times we feed into the concept of More is Better.  When we pay incredible amounts for food at Whole Foods when you can buy the same product at Wal-Mart for less then half the price or paying more for gas at Shell when you can get THE SAME GAS at your local gas station.  But those things are just the tip of the iceberg.

We in America pay so much money for these Cadillac insurance policies that only promote sickness.  We have to pay Co-Pays for every treatment.  We have to pay Co-Pays for every prescription that gets filled every week, two weeks, or month.  We pay sometimes just to get through to the actual insurance company representative on the phone for advice.  When you factor in how much the average American Family is paying to STAY SICK you’d start to understand why we can’t afford our mortgage payments, private school, taxes, or even HEALTH INSURANCE.

This video is about two young kids who had unexplained pain in multiple parts of their delicate systems that no medical doctor could figure out.  And even though there were no true diagnoses, they felt it was necessary to medicate these poor children and TREAT THE SYMPTOMS that they had no answers for.  Until they found Upper Cervical Chiropractic.  With a simply adjustment to realign the atlas to remove the interference between the Mind, Body, and Soul, these kids had hope and no longer had their “UNEXPLAINED ILLNESSES AND SYMPTOMS.”

It’s wonderful when the light bulb shines bright above your head during that “ah-ha” moment when you realize that LESS IS MORE.  When you simply make one simple shift in your life and everything else just falls right into place…kind of like Tetris!

I encourage you to go see your local Upper Cervical Chiropractor today and just simply allow everything to fall into place.

The Wellness Revolution!

k05965922Being in Chiropractic school was quite a trip.  I went in not knowing that there were different techniques.  I have been adjusted since I was 4 years old, which was always full spine, and never knew what I was in for when it came to choosing a technique.  There are techniques where you adjust every possible joint in the body, where you use instruments, where you only work with muscle, where you only work with energy, or where you only adjust the upper cervical spine.  There are many many more and the list could go on and on, but my fingers would fall off.

What shocked me though was the internal fighting amongst the Chiropractic profession.  Each technique saying that they were the superior technique.  That they were the only ones who could help a patient.  It was also a trip to sit in class and listen to people argue about these techniques when they hadn’t even started adjusting people.

Then something clicked for me.  IT ALL WORKS!  It just depends on what you are focusing on for your patient.  Some techniques are awesome just for low back pain, others for neurological issues, others just to maintain wellness, and others were great for greedy Chiropractors to make money.  Most of us could agree that we didn’t become Chiropractors for money, but to get sick people well!

Chiropractic was not formed for a new age of doctors to get rich.  It was formed out of the pure love in the heart of DD Palmer in order to get sick people well.  DD happened to get a deaf man to hear by popping his back and instead of thinking of this as a fluke, he went with it and studied it realizing that people like Hippocrates and European bone setters had already figured out that the life force from the Mind to the Body and to the Soul traveled through the nervous system, located in the spine, and if there is an interference, the expression of that life force was diminished.

DD Palmer, I salute you!

I want the people I serve to know that they are not a dollar sign in my eyes and that they are truly loved.  I want them to know that every time I ADjust them, only pure love and gratitude comes through.  I want them to walk into my office the next week without the need for another adjustment.  I want them to give me a huge hug and thank me for being present at every moment through out their ongoing care.  I want them to come back every once-and-a-while to just get checked in order to maintain their health.  I also want them to walk in the next week with 10 of their friends and family and ask me if I have time to check them as well.

You see, if you only look at a patient as a dollar sign then all they become is a WANT and you will be thoroughly disappointed when they become a NEED and your retention rate is in the crapper.  This is the doctor who has to do spinal screenings or health fairs in the mall just in order to keep their doors open.  What if you were doing health fairs and spinal screenings just for the intention of educating the public about how to stay healthy in order for them not to HAVE to come into your office every week?  I would much rather have 1000 healthy patients who just come in to get checked, then 1000 every week regulars who constantly need to be adjusted.

ISN’T IT TRUE THAT THE POWER THAT CREATED THE BODY CAN HEAL THE BODY?  If that’s true, then who are we as chiropractors?  We are mediators between the patient and their body.  All we do is simply remove the interference in order for them to communicate with each other.

So, however you decide to do this, please make sure that you do it with the correct intent.  I honestly could care less on your technique.  You can be a Diversified practitioner, a Gonstead practitioner, an HIO or NUCCA practitioner, or doing something like ART, Decompression, or Network.  As long as you have the intent of pure love and healing for that person, it WILL work.  There is no question.

But, what are we treating?  DD and BJ didn’t treat just back pain.  They didn’t even TREAT anything.  All they did was simply remove the interference within the system in order to allow the MIND, BODY, and SOUL to communicate properly.

The largest problem that we face today has nothing to do with the medical community or with insurance companies.  The largest problem that we face today is each other.  All we do is fight and bicker.  “My technique is better then yours.” Or, “Well BJ said…” Come on!  We wonder why the medical community isn’t to stoked about us.  Well, it’s because we aren’t too stoked about OURSELVES!  Until we can all agree to disagree and see that we all still have the same vision; to get sick people well through chiropractic, then we will get nowhere.  And nowhere has room for EVERYONE!

I decided a while ago that my main mission in life after was to be able to unite all of chiropractic.  I want us all to stand hand and hand and bring this amazing gift in which we share to all of the people of the world.  We should all be able to refer to each other in a heart beat without feeling like that new doctor is going to bash you and try and keep this patient for life.  If my patient needs muscle work, I’m immediately sending them to an ART specialist knowing that they will still come back to me for chiropractic.  If my patient needs to get a neurological consult, then I will immediately send them out to a Chiropractic Neurologist.  I don’t want to unite us for the sake of our egos.  I could have a philosophical debate any day and argue technique to death.  I think its fun!  But, we need to unite FOR THE WORLD and our future patients that we will serve.  If we can’t unite, then chiropractic will never truly be global.

We shouldn’t even be communicating with insurance companies.  We should have our own.  We should have Wellness Insurance that provides for all types of wellness care such as Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Pilates, Yoga, etc.  These patients will only pay when they are WELL or becoming WELL because we are doing a great job, and they will not pay when they are sick because we aren’t doing a good job.  Unfortunately, during the 80s we had to many greedy chiropractors taking advantage of insurance companies, and we wonder why those insurance companies NOW take advantage of US.  We should be helping the insurance companies in getting rid of the chiropractors that rely on them in order to allow those chiropractors and their patients to have the freedom to be happy and healthy.  Nobody will ever be healthy until it is truly under their control and their freedom to do so.

Like Dr. Demartini said, we are no longer quacks, alternative, or complimentary.  We are the new revolution.  We are the WELLNESS REVOLUTION!  We now have more responsibility then ever.  There is no better time then NOW to become united and take the first step into this revolution together because a revolution can’t just have one person fighting for it’s cause.  We need SOLDIERS and we need to do it in order to serve the WORLD!  In order to act globally, we have to think astronomically!  Many Chiropractors think only within their doors of their clinic.  SNAP OUT OF IT!  Let’s do this!  Let’s take over the world of healthcare.  The opportunity is right in front of us, all we have to do is reach out and grab it!  BJ said it himself, the only thing permanent is change, and progress is EVOLUTION!  You can’t have evolution without a revolution.

So, look around you.  These people are your fellow soldiers who will always have your back.  They will always be available when you need them.  They will always be right next to you when you are feeling down and you will always be right next to them when they feel down.  But, you know what’s best, they will always be right next to you when you are feeling great and when you least expect it.

Who’s ready for the WELLNESS REVOLUTION?!
